Understanding Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a chronic, progressive disease that causes a person to feel compelled to consume alcohol despite its harmful effects on their health, relationships, and well-being. According to the DSM-5, AUD is diagnosed when a pattern of drinking leads to significant impairment or distress, meeting at least two of eleven criteria within a 12-month period. These criteria include strong cravings, difficulty controlling or cutting down alcohol use, and continuing to drink despite negative social, work-related, or health consequences.

Treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders

For many people, alcohol addiction doesn’t exist on its own. Conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder often occur alongside substance use, with each condition influencing the other. At Cornerstone, our team understands that lasting recovery requires treating both, not just the symptoms of alcohol addiction.

We specialize in treating co-occurring disorders at our alcohol treatment center in Arizona through an integrated approach that addresses your mental health and substance use at the same time. By helping you better understand the connection between your mental health and alcohol use, we empower you to build healthier coping skills, reduce the risk of relapse, and create a stronger foundation for lasting recovery.

What programs do you offer for alcohol addiction?

We provide a range of programs tailored to support various stages of alcohol recovery. Options include Residential Treatment, where clients stay full-time in a structured, immersive environment; the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for daytime intensive support; Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with flexible scheduling; and Outpatient Treatment, suited for milder cases or step-down care. Each program offers unique, supportive paths to sustainable recovery.

Detox is a vital first step in alcohol abuse treatment. We partner with reputable detox centers that accept most insurance plans. We do not currently offer detox, however we’ll help arrange detox care, ensuring a smooth transition to our programs once detox is complete. Our approach ensures that clients experience a seamless, supported journey from detox to treatment.

Yes, smoking or vaping is allowed in designated outdoor areas at our treatment facility. We understand that quitting all substances at once can be overwhelming, so nicotine use is generally permitted, though we also offer support for clients who wish to quit smoking during their recovery journey.

All clients will have access to their cell phones after a 7-day blackout period. You can use your phone during specific times, such as breaks or free time, to ensure that it does not interfere with your treatment and recovery process. Our goal is to create a focused, supportive environment where you can fully engage in the program.

After completing alcohol addiction treatment, we provide continuous support through our Recovery Coaching program, part of our Alumni services. Our Recovery Coaches stay connected with clients, offering resources and guidance to help navigate life beyond treatment. Whether it’s help finding work, managing stress, or continuing therapy, our goal is to support sustainable, lifelong recovery.

If a loved one isn’t ready for treatment, start with an open, non-judgmental conversation. Express concern for their well-being and offer support. If they’re hesitant, explore options together and consult addiction specialists for guidance. Remember, helping someone struggling with addiction can be draining, so prioritize your own well-being, too.

Let's begin the journey together
